Chinese Economic Statecraft and Foreign Policy Realignments
At a more general level, our core project deals with how a once in a life-time change in the international economic structure, namely the integration of the BRICS in the global economy, affects domestic institutions, policies and practices in the countries that are engaging economically with the BRICS. In this process, China occupies a place of choice due to its sheer size and resources. Our side project deals with the challenge to the Western Liberal International Order brought about by the economic rise of China. Specifically, we examine the impact of Chinese commercially-oriented financial flows on recipient country foreign policy realignment. We are interested in recipient countries’ political realignment with China, which we measure as decreasing ideal point distance in voting behavior between the recipient country and China in the United Nations General Assembly.
